Within the city limits of Ludlow and Chicopee in Western
Massachusetts, Westover Air Force Base is home to the largest Air Reserve Bases
in the USA. The large municipality of
Springfield, MA is adjacent. Plans for
the base originated in 1939 with anticipation of the coming World War. The base was built to house 1400 with
recreational facilities, housing, medical, and more services. During WWII it
was home to 8,000.
The base is just a short drive to the larger urban and
advantages of both Springfield, Massachusetts and down river, Hartford,
Connecticut. Currently the base is host
to multiple military units. Springfield,
Massachusetts on the shores of the Connecticut River is home to the Basketball
Hall of Fame, birthplace of Theodore Geisel (Dr. Seuss) and host to the well
know Big E ' Exposition Center which hosts activities for an expansive variety
of interests year round including the State Fair. Forest Park, Springfield's 785 acre park was designed
by Olmstead, after he finished designing NYC's Central Park. It attracts many
residents and visitors to its zoo, skating rink, numerous gardens, sculptures,
bridges, a 31 acre lake, paddleboats, an amphitheater, numerous ball fields as
well as seasonal events.
Springfield and the surrounding communities of Ludlow,
Chicopee, Northhampton and Longmeadow offer many residential opportunities that
military individuals and families may take advantage of.
