About Walter Reed National Military Medical Center

Recently dubbed 'The Nation's Medical Center' because it is one of the world's largest and most renowned military medical centers, the facility sits on 243 acres and was founded in September of 2011 when the National Naval Medical Center and Walter Reed Army Medical Center merged to form Walter Reed National Military Medical Center (WRNMMC). Before the two facilities combined, the National Naval Medical Center served and cared for every President of the United States, Members of Congress and the Supreme Court, and other country leaders. When authorized, WRNMMC also cares for foreign embassy and military personnel.
Located in Bethesda, Maryland (just 10 miles northwest of Washington, DC), WRNMMC is easily accessible to its staff of 7,000. The DC suburb has a population near 61,000 and is known predominantly as a modern residential community with an urban pocket surrounding the Bethesda Metro Station. Major employers in the area include Sodexo, Marriott and Lockheed Martin, as well as DISCOVERY Communications in nearby Silver Spring, Howard Hughes Medical Institute in Chevy Chase, and J. Craig Venter Institute in Rockville.
