About USCG Hampton Roads

Rich in history, overflowing with natural resources and jam-packed with economic, cultural and recreational opportunity, Hampton Roads is a diverse and friendly community. It is one of the nation's largest Metropolitan Areas.

 

Positioned in southeastern Virginia where the Chesapeake Bay meets the Atlantic Ocean, Hampton Roads is divided between the 'Southside''Chesapeake, Norfolk, Portsmouth, Smithfield, Suffolk and Virginia Beach; and the 'Peninsula' ' Gloucester, Hampton, Newport News, Poquoson, Williamsburg, James City County and York County.

 

The Region which includes Williamsburg, Newport News, Hampton, Norfolk, Portsmouth, Chesapeake, and Virginia Beach is home to perhaps the largest military concentration in the world.

 

The US Coast Guard Fifth District, based in Portsmouth Virginia, is home to the Base Support Unit, Personnel Support Services Unit, and Health Safety and Work Life Field Office.

 

Nestled between the Elizabeth River on the east and the Chesapeake Bay on the north, Portsmouth has a small town atmosphere, yet is just 15 minutes from Norfolk International Airport, and 30 minutes from Virginia Beach.

Porstmouth

Equally enticing for both nature lovers and history buffs, Portsmouth is replete with old town charm. 300 years old with a rich naval legacy, the town has a striking combination of old and new. Modern conveniences are knotted with historic nautical attractions.

 

There are all sorts of outdoor activities available; golfers can take a swing at any of the six area golf courses. Additionally, an urban wildlife refuge is also part of the diverse findings within Portsmouth; be sure to visit Hoffler Creek Wildlife Preserve. Nature lovers embrace this 142-acre paradise. It is home to white-tailed deer, red foxes, river otters, and hundreds of varieties of migratory and resident birds.

Nature, history and beautiful environs ' it's no wonder so many people have sailed into Portsmouth.
