About San Antonio Military Medical Center

Brooke Army Medical Center was formerly known as Brooke General Hospital.  In 1987, construction began for its new updated hospital aimed at being bigger and better. On April 13, 1996 Brooks Army Medical Center (BAMC) relocated patients from the 'old' BAMC to the 'new' BAMC and was officially opened for business.

The hospital offers a variety of services including, but not limited to, medical and surgical care, 24 hour emergency room, adult and pediatric primary care, wellness clinics, preventative services, and environmental health services.  BAMC holds 450 beds on a daily basis but has the capacity to be expanded to 653 beds in a crisis event. The medical center is also home to the Army Burn Center and has become a teaching hospital for the USUHS, as well as the University of Texas Health Science Center.

In 2005, BAMC welcomed the Center for the Intrepid (CFI) with their mission being to provide rehabilitation services for those who have sustained injuries such as amputations, functional limb loss, burns, and to educate others on the opportunities of ground breaking rehabilitation modalities.  The patients of the CFI challenge themselves with occupational therapy, demanding sports equipment, virtual reality systems, and state-of-the-art physical therapy systems.  In 2009, construction began on the multi-level 5,000 space parking structure and also the new Consolidated Tower (CoTo). The CoTo is home to the emergency and trauma center, an outpatient pediatrics clinic, psychiatric nursing units, and administrative space.

BAMC is also home to the U.S. Army Institute of Surgical Research Burn Center which has treated over 800 of our military service members.  The center focuses on combat casualty care with state-of-the-art equipment to prioritize improved care on the battlefield.  Due to their research, advances have been made in equipment and clothing for soldiers resulting in enhanced protection for the individual. The ISR has also teamed up with UCLA to create a focus team called Operation Mend with the base goal of being to improve chances of reconstruction for burn victims.
