About Naval Station Newport

Naval Station Newport is a United States Navy base located in Newport, Rhode Island.   It is currently the only active base in the state. Newport is known as the "Birthplace of the Navy".  Today, it is the home of the United States Naval War College, the Naval Undersea Warfare Center, and a major United States Navy training center.

Newport is the largest city on Aquidneck Island in Newport County, about 30 miles south of Providence. The 2010 population was 24,672, and the city has a total area of 11.5 square miles, 7.9 square miles land and 3.5 square miles water. With coastlines on the west, south and east, Newport is truly a maritime city, and is known as the sailing capitol of the United States.

Newport combines three communities into one:  year-round residents, the Navy, and summer visitors.  Housing consists primarily of single family homes, condos and apartments, and the median home price in 2011 was $352,000.
