Marine Corps Base Quantico, or MCB Quantico, is also known as the "Crossroads of the Marine Corps" and is located on over 58,000 acres in Prince William County, VA. There are roughly 6,560 active duty personnel stationed at the base, and 2,232 civilian employees work there.
MCB Quantico is the home of major training institutions for both the Marine Corps and federal law enforcement agencies, including: Marine Memorial (located at the front gate of MCB Quantico), Drug Enforcement Administration Training Academy, FBI Academy, FBI Laboratory, FBI Hostage Rescue Team (HRT) and Marine Raider Museum, among many others. Additionally, the base is also a Live Action Training facility, known locally as the "Sound of Freedom". MCB Quantico has implemented outreach beyond its borders to become involved in providing regional support to the National Capital Region and beyond. It is also the site of the Marine Corps Combat Development Command and Marine Helicopter Squadron 1 used for training and education. The squadron was the first to provide rapid helicopter transportation of U.S. Presidents, a mission they continue today. With so many diverse units, it appropriately earned its nickname as the Crossroads of the Marine Corps. This may be the only command whose mission touches the farthest reaches of the Corps; decisions made at MCB Quantico impact Marines aboard ship, fighting in the War on Terrorism, on guard duty at embassies around the world, and reserve duty throughout the United States
Located just 35 miles from Washington, D.C., Prince William County has a population of over 438,000. The majority of base personnel call the following Prince William communities home: Woodbridge, Dale City, Montclair, Lake Ridge, Dumfries, Aquia Harbor, Triangle, Occoquan, and Manassas. The average Prince William County home price is $334,000, which is significantly lower than other counties in the DC Metro Area. However, thanks to the convenience of commuter train stations available at the base and surrounding communities, a number of personnel stationed at MCB Quantico also elect to live in counties closer to the city, including Fairfax and Alexandria located to the north, and Stafford and Spotsylvania County to the south.
Education is important to the families of those stationed at MCB Quantico, and to serve that need, there are a number of public and private schools in Prince William County, including two public high schools, three public middle schools, and twelve elementary schools. Prince William County has something for everyone, offering an abundance of opportunities. Residents enjoy twelve golf courses; national, state and local parks, sanctuaries and wetlands; three water parks; indoor and outdoor ice skating rinks; Potomac Nationals baseball games; and Potomac Mills, which is recognized throughout the region for its outlet shopping; and much more.
