"8th & I" is the more familiar term for the Marine Barracks in Washington, DC, and it is the oldest active post in the Marine Corps. Both President Thomas Jefferson and Lt. Col. William Ward Burrows, the third commandant of the Marine Corps, are credited with its founding in 1801. Today, the Barracks supports both ceremonial and security missions.
Among its units, the Barracks includes the nationally acknowledged Marine Corps Silent Drill Platoon, the Marine Drum and Bugle Corps, Marine Band, Marine Corps Body Bearers, and the official Marine Corps Color Guard.
The Marine Corps Body Bearer Section features 15 Marine infantrymen whose primary mission is casket bearing at funerals for Marines, former Marines and Marine family members at Arlington National Cemetery and the surrounding cemeteries of the National Capital Region. Occasionally, the infantrymen travel to locations around the country to support funerals for senior statesmen, heads of state, as well as former Presidents of the United States.
Southeast Washington, DC, where the Barracks is located, has a youthful population of just over 27,000 and is conveniently located near housing options in downtown DC. An excellent public transportation system also permits easy access to the many popular cities and suburbs of Northern Virginia and Maryland as well.
Residents of Southeast DC are close to Capitol Hill, the historic Eastern Market, Navy Yard, Anacostia River, and Washington Nationals Park. The majority of housing in Washington, DC consists of townhouses or row houses, condos, and co-ops. A number of residential buildings have historic significance, but certain neighborhoods have experienced a recent surge of new construction primarily on amenity-rich condos, co-ops and apartments. Prices in the nearby Capitol Hill neighborhood average $725,000. Rentals are offered in DC, Maryland and Northern Virginia, with spring through late summer proving peak season for those seeking to lease a property.
The nation's capital provides ample opportunity to satisfy every resident's interest: from history, museums, and cultural pursuits to sports and outdoor activities, shopping, dining and entertainment.
