About Joint Base McGuire Dix Lakehurst

Dubbing itself the "Airship Capital of the World", Lakehurst is a community of about 2,600 people. It gained recognition at the turn of the century as a winter resort, the home of The Pine Tree Inn. It is probably better known (tragically) as the site where The Hindenburg crashed in 1937.

Joint Base McGuire Dix Lakehurst or JB MDL was formerly three separate bases.  The merger of the Army, Navy and Air Force bases became Joint Base McGuire-Dix-Lakehurst in 2009. Home to five different wings, this is the premier air mobility and joint war fighting installation in the United State. This is the first Department of Defense joint air force base that has the three installations merged together.  They are located in two of New Jersey's largest counties, Ocean and Burlington.  The bases consist of 42,000 contiguous acres.  It spans more than 20 miles across the state.  JB MDL is home to the 87th Air Base wing and boasts more than 45,000 Airmen, Sailors, Marines, Coast Guardsmen, Army and civilians who work and live on the base or the surrounding area.  Lakehurst Naval Air Station, as it was formerly known, was the location of the disastrous German Airship Hindenburg crash in 1937.
