About Hanscom Air Force Base

Located approximately two miles from Bedford, Massachusetts, Hanscom Air Force Base (formerly known as Bedford Air Field) was named for Laurence G. Hanscom a reporter and pilot from Worcester, MA who died in a plane crash in 1941.  From the time it was taken over in WWII by the military until today's mix of military and civilian operations, Hanscom has been an integral part of the local community who rallied during its planned closing to keep it open and operating.

Today Hanscom Air Force Base is home to the 66th Air Base Group as well as an Education Center and Retiree's Office.   It is located near some of the most beautiful historical locations such as Thoreau's Walden's Pond, Minute Man National Historic Park where the opening battle of the American Revolution took place and charming New England communities of Concord, Lexington, Lincoln, Bedford and many more.  With housing on the base limited, these communities provide rich opportunities for the families of the military and retirees ' communities where arts, education, history, sports and other activities can be enjoyed.
