About 1st Marine Corps District

The 1st Marine Corps District was first activated on September 1st, 1937. In August 1956, 1st Marine Corps and Recruiting District moved their headquarters from Boston to Long Island. The headquarters is located on Stewart Avenue in Garden City, N.Y. The grounds of Stewart Ave. are filled with history. The location was originally Camp Mills in 1776, then the training grounds for the War of 1812, the Mexican War, Spanish American War and World War I.

The building was purchased immediately following the end of the war in 1945 for $319,000 by Navy Records Management Center and used to process and microfilm the paperwork of the thousands of discharged servicemen of WWII.

The building was only occupied by a small team of caretakers for almost a year. Alicia Patterson, the publisher of a small up and coming newspaper called
NEWSDAY, tried to acquire the property unsuccessfully. After a failed attempt, she built her plant next door.

In 1953, a public affairs officer was scouting the area to relocate the 1st Marine Corps and Recruiting District. On August 3, 1953, the Maries took occupancy of the property.

Today 1st Marine Corps District houses 350 military and government service employees. The 1st Marine Corps District includes a total of eight recruiting stations throughout the state, each compromised of ten to fifteen recruiting substations.
